The UFC middleweight division is one of the deepest in the sport, with a champion who’s proven his worth through adversity and a contender tier that includes some of the most dangerous 185-pounders the division has ever seen. Here’s our April 2026 breakdown.
Champion: Dricus du Plessis
DDP has answered every question that was asked of him. Dismissed early as a dangerous but beatable fighter, he defeated Israel Adesanya to become champion and then stopped Sean Strickland to silence the doubters. His unorthodox offensive entries, constant pressure, and elite durability make him one of the hardest matchups in the division. The chin, the heart, and the finishing ability are all verified at the highest level.
#1: Israel Adesanya
Adesanya remains the division’s most decorated fighter and a permanent fixture at the top of the rankings despite his losses to du Plessis. His striking remains elite — the counter timing, the patience, and the ability to shut down offensive opponents are still among the best in the sport. At 185, his size and reach make him a stylistic problem for nearly everyone not named du Plessis.
#2: Sean Strickland
Strickland is never far from the title picture. His combination of volume, forward pressure, and durability makes him one of the most difficult middleweights to hurt. His willingness to eat punches while walking opponents down eventually overwhelms most fighters in the division. He will be back in title contention within one or two wins.
#3: Robert Whittaker
The former champion continues to be a top-three middleweight by any honest accounting. His boxing — the jab, the counter right, the footwork — is the best in the division outside of Adesanya. He has shown resilience in losses and comes back stronger. A win over either of the two fighters above him immediately re-opens the title case.
#4: Nassourdine Imavov
Imavov has been one of the most impressive performers in the division over the last two years. His combination of striking and grappling gives him versatility the top of the division doesn’t always have answers for. A win over a top-three contender would legitimize a title shot.
#5: Marvin Vettori
Vettori is the division’s most reliable grappling threat at the contender level. His pressure wrestling and top control have given elite strikers consistent problems. Not a finisher, but an extremely difficult out for any stylistic matchup.
